Fajon concerned over media freedom in Serbia

European Parliament official Tanja Fajon MEP expressed concern over the state of media freedom in Serbia during a meeting with President Aleksandar Vucic.

A press release from the president’s press service said that Fajon, chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the European Union-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, also praised the Serbian authorities for drafting a national media strategy. She is also quoted as saying that the European Parliament advocates the expansion of the EU with Serbia being one of the most serious candidates.  

“The European Parliament will continue to support the EU expansion policy and advocates Serbia’s approach as the best way to achieve progress in European integration,” she said.  

The statement quoted Vucic as saying that he hopes the new EU institutions will continue to support the expansion policy and Serbia’s European path. He welcomed the appointment of Vladimir Bilcik MEP as European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia and thanked his predecessor David McAllister for actively contributing to the country’s European integration. “Serbia advocates peace and stability in the region with regional cooperation, stronger ties with neighbors and a continuing policy of reconciliation as foreign policy priorities,” the president said.
